As the primary source of information for automotive electronic control systems, automotive sensors constitute a critical component of these systems and represent one of the core areas of research within the field of automotive electronics technology. These sensors perform real-time, accurate measurement and control of various parameters, including temperature, pressure, position, rotational speed, acceleration, and vibration. The sophistication of a modern high-end automobile's control system is largely gauged by both the quantity and the advanced capabilities of its sensors. Currently, an average domestic family car is equipped with nearly one hundred sensors, while the number of sensors found in a luxury vehicle can reach as many as two hundred.

 

Over the past several years, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology-which evolved from semiconductor integrated circuit technology-has reached a stage of increasing maturity. This technology enables the fabrication of a wide variety of miniature sensors capable of sensing and detecting mechanical, magnetic, thermal, chemical, and biological quantities. These sensors are characterized by their compact size and low power consumption; they facilitate the realization of numerous novel functions, are well-suited for high-precision mass production at a low unit cost, and can be readily integrated into large-scale, multi-functional arrays-making them exceptionally well-suited for automotive applications.
