An automotive starter is a component that converts electrical energy from the battery into mechanical energy to drive the engine flywheel. It consists of a DC motor, a drive mechanism, and an electromagnetic control switch. Starters are available in two voltage ratings-12V and 24V-and feature two distinct gear-head designs: shielded and unshielded. For domestically produced vehicle models, the typical service life is approximately 6 years or 100,000 kilometers, whereas joint-venture and imported models can achieve a lifespan of up to 10 years or 200,000 kilometers. During operation, the drive gear within the transmission mechanism engages with the flywheel ring gear to transmit torque; once the engine has started, the mechanism automatically disengages, while the electromagnetic switch regulates the opening and closing of the electrical circuit.

 

This component has replaced traditional manual starting methods to become the standard configuration in modern vehicles. Based on differences in their drive mechanisms, starters are categorized into various types, including the positive-engagement type, armature-shift type, and gear-reduction type. Electromagnetic-operated starters utilize a relay to remotely control the main circuit and are widely employed in automobiles, power generators, and heavy machinery. During maintenance, it is necessary to inspect the drive gear for wear, as well as to check the condition of the electromagnetic switch contacts and the magnetic coil; particular attention should be paid to any abnormal knocking sounds that may indicate improper engagement between the drive gear and the flywheel ring gear.
